There is a film of tissue surrounding muscles (and all other structures in the body) called fascia. This fascia allows muscles to slide around and past other structures.
Due to injury, surgery, chronic tension or inflammation, this fascia can become stuck or contracted. This then limits and restricts how muscles are able to move.
Myofascial release uses gentle tensioning of muscles to help release the covering fascia, as fascia does not respond to the big stretches used for stretching muscles.
It helps to reduce pain, ease muscle tension, increase muscle length and help increase blood circulation.
